How the Academy Votes
Who nominates what, why Best Picture is counted differently from every other category, and the confirmed dates for the 99th Oscars.
The Academy publishes more about its process than either of the other two decisions I model. The voting windows are announced almost a year ahead, the ballot rules are on the record, and the membership is large enough that campaign behavior is visible in public. What stays private is the count. No vote totals are ever released, which means the interesting question is never "how many votes did it get" but "which group was voting, and how were their ballots added up."
Those two things change from round to round, and getting them straight explains a lot of results that look like upsets.

Two different electorates
The Academy is divided into branches by craft. Actors, directors, editors, cinematographers, composers and so on each belong to their own group, and that structure decides who gets to nominate.
At the nomination stage, you nominate inside your own branch. Actors choose the acting nominees. Directors choose the directing nominees. Editors choose the editing nominees. A member of a branch with no matching category on the ballot nominates for Best Picture only. Best Picture itself is the exception in the other direction: every member with voting privileges nominates it, which is why it is the one category where the whole Academy has a say twice.
At the final stage, everybody votes on everything. The full membership picks the winner in every category, including the crafts they have no professional experience in. A costume designer votes for Best Director. A sound mixer votes for Best Actress.
That split is the single most useful thing to understand about Oscar forecasting. A nomination is a verdict from people who do the job. A win is a verdict from the whole industry, most of whom are choosing between five names they have heard about all season. The signals that predict one are not the signals that predict the other, and my model treats the two stages separately for exactly this reason.
How the ballots are counted
Three different counting methods are in play across a single Oscar season.

The winner has to be acceptable to most of the Academy. Being adored by the largest single bloc is not enough on its own. |
| Every other winner | Plurality | One vote, most votes wins. A performance loved by 30 percent of voters and ignored by the rest can take the category outright. |
The Best Picture rule is why the year's most polarizing film so often loses a race it appeared to lead. Under plurality it would win on the strength of its supporters. Under a preferential count, films that voters rank last drop out of contention, and a consensus second choice can pass a divisive first choice on redistribution.
The season, in order
A film has to have played in a qualifying release during the calendar year. For the 99th Oscars the eligibility window is January 1 through December 31, 2026. From there the voting runs in four rounds.

Two things I do not have in a form worth publishing yet: the current membership count by branch, and the full list of which categories run a shortlist round. Both shape how much a given precursor signal is worth, so they are on my list to capture properly rather than approximate here.
Why the guilds matter so much
The precursor awards my model leans hardest on are guild prizes: the Producers Guild, the Directors Guild, SAG and BAFTA. That is not because guilds are wiser. It is because their voting bodies overlap heavily with the Academy branches that hand out the equivalent Oscar, and they vote weeks earlier on the same field of films.
The DGA award is a read on what working directors think, and working directors nominate Best Director. SAG is a read on working actors, who make up the Academy's largest branch. When those groups agree, the Oscar is usually settled before the final ballot even opens. When they split, the race is genuinely live, and my model's confidence bands widen to say so.
